The Technique

What is German smear?

German smear — also called schmear or mortar wash — is a centuries-old masonry technique in which a wet mortar mixture is hand-troweled directly onto brick and then partially wiped away before it sets. The result is a soft, European-inspired finish that preserves the texture of the underlying brick while transforming its color and character.

Unlike paint, German smear is permanent, breathable, and will never peel. Unlike limewash, it adds dimensional texture and a distinct hand-crafted look that ages beautifully with the home.

Why homeowners choose German smear

Permanent finish

It bonds to the brick at a molecular level. No peeling, no fading, no reapplication — ever.

Breathable masonry

The lime-based mortar allows moisture to pass through, protecting your brick from trapped water damage.

Customizable coverage

From a light wash that reveals most of the original brick to a heavy coat that mimics aged limestone.

Increases home value

A professionally applied German smear significantly enhances curb appeal and perceived home value.

Low maintenance

Once applied, there is nothing to maintain, repaint, or touch up. The finish improves with age.

Eco-friendly materials

Our mortar is made from natural lime, Portland cement, and water. No VOCs, no synthetic chemicals.

Common questions about German smear

Yes. German smear is a mortar-based finish that permanently bonds to the brick surface. Unlike paint or limewash, it will not peel, fade, or require reapplication. Once applied, the finish becomes part of the masonry itself — aging gracefully over decades.

Not at all. German smear works with your existing brick, not against it. The lime-based mortar is breathable, meaning moisture can still pass through the masonry. This preserves the structural integrity of your brick while transforming its appearance.

Absolutely. We work with you to determine the ideal coverage — from a light, translucent wash that allows most of the original brick character to show, to a heavy, nearly full mortar coat that creates a European limestone look. We always apply a sample wall section for your approval before proceeding.

Most residential exteriors take three to five business days, depending on total square footage and architectural complexity. Fireplaces and accent walls are typically completed within one to two days. We provide a detailed timeline during your consultation.

We serve the greater Nashville area and surrounding communities across middle Tennessee, including Franklin, Brentwood, Belle Meade, Hendersonville, Gallatin, and beyond. Contact us if you are outside our typical service radius — we regularly take on projects throughout the Southeast.

Yes. Every project begins with a complimentary on-site consultation. A craftsperson — not a salesperson — will evaluate your brick, discuss your vision, and provide a detailed, transparent estimate. There is never any obligation.
